The Best Handheld GPS Units, and Whether You Need One at All
A phone does everything a handheld GPS does, until the battery dies or the screen stops responding to a wet finger. That is the entire product category.
A modern phone has a better screen, better maps and a faster processor than any handheld GPS, and with offline maps downloaded it works without signal. A dedicated unit wins on exactly three things: battery life measured in days rather than hours, physical buttons that work with wet or gloved hands, and being genuinely waterproof and drop-resistant.
For a day hike with a downloaded map and a charged phone, a handheld GPS is not necessary and most people should not buy one. For a multi-day trip in bad weather where the phone is also the camera, the alarm and the emergency contact, it becomes a reasonable second device.
The strongest argument against buying either, though, is that neither is a substitute for knowing where you are. A map and compass do not run out of battery and are covered in how to read a topographic map and how to navigate without a phone.

What multi-band GNSS actually fixes
Every GPS receiver works out where it is by timing signals from satellites. In open sky that is straightforward. Under a canopy or between canyon walls, signals arrive after bouncing off surfaces, so they took longer than a direct path would, and the receiver reads that extra travel time as extra distance.
A multi-band receiver picks up two different frequencies from the same satellite. Reflections affect the two frequencies differently, which gives the unit a way to spot and reject them. The practical result is a position that stays put under trees instead of wandering thirty meters at a time, and it matters most exactly where navigation is hardest.
IPX7 does not mean you can swim with it
Both units publish IPX7, which is immersion in one meter of water for thirty minutes. That covers rain, a dropped unit in a puddle and a brief dunking at a stream crossing. It does not cover being clipped to a pack that goes under in a river crossing, or prolonged submersion at depth, and the X in IPX7 means dust resistance has not been rated at all. Treat it as robust rather than invulnerable, and keep the unit under a rain jacket in sustained weather.
Maps are the part that costs money after the purchase
Both units come with Garmin's TopoActive mapping preloaded, which covers routable roads and trails and is genuinely good enough for most hiking. Where people get caught is assuming that detailed topographic mapping for a specific region is included; premium map products are sold separately and can cost a meaningful fraction of the device.
There is a free route: both units read standard map formats from a microSD card, and volunteer-produced OpenStreetMap-derived topo maps for most of the world are available at no cost. They are less polished and perfectly usable. A microSD card is the only purchase involved.
Batteries, and the one habit that matters
Both units take two AA batteries, and the type changes the published runtime substantially. Lithium AAs last longer than alkaline, weigh less, and keep working in the cold where alkaline cells lose much of their capacity. Rechargeable NiMH sits in between and is the sensible everyday choice.
Set the unit to tell it which chemistry you have fitted. Both Garmins have a battery-type setting, and getting it wrong means the remaining-charge indicator is simply wrong, which is how people end up with a unit that dies without warning. Carry one spare pair per three days and keep them warm in cold weather.
Which to buy
Buy the eTrex 32x if you want the most hours per battery and the lowest weight, which describes most hiking. Buy the GPSMAP 65s if you navigate in canyons or dense forest where accuracy is the thing that fails, and accept 9 fewer hours per pair of batteries.
Buy neither if what you actually want is to be found in an emergency — a GPS tells you where you are and tells nobody else. That device is in best satellite messengers for camping.

The drawback

Multi-band is the reason to pay more. A single-frequency receiver in a canyon is working with signals that have bounced off rock before reaching it, and that is where position errors of tens of meters come from. Receiving two frequencies from the same satellite lets the unit identify and discard those reflections.
The drawback
Up to 16 hours on 2x AA against 25 on the eTrex, because tracking more constellations on more frequencies costs power. It is also heavier and larger.

Everyone else in this category will tell you they tested twenty of these. We have not tested any of them, and we would rather say so than pretend. There is no gear closet here and no test lab.
What we did instead: pulled the published specifications from each manufacturer's own spec sheet or manual, named the standard behind every rating so you can check what it actually promises, did the arithmetic that turns a spec into a decision, and pulled today's real retail price rather than quoting one from memory. Every pick states a drawback, because a list where nothing is wrong with anything is an advert.
