Editorial policy

Independence

No brand pays for a position on any list on this site. There are no sponsored placements, no paid inclusions, and no arrangement under which a manufacturer sees or approves copy before it is published. We accept no free products, which is straightforward given that we do not test anything.

We do earn affiliate commission on purchases made through links here, and that is disclosed above the first link on every commercial page and in full at how this site is funded. Commission rates never determine rankings. Where a lower-paying or non-paying retailer is the better option for the reader, we say so and link it.

How picks are made

The full method, including the standards we cite and the limits of the approach, is at how we research. In summary: published manufacturer specifications, the governing standard named where one exists, arithmetic the reader can reproduce, and live retail prices. We have not tested this gear and every roundup says so.

Two rules are enforced by how the site is built rather than by discipline:

• Every pick states a drawback. The field is required in the content model, so a pick without one cannot be published.
• No page can contain a hardcoded price. There is no price field to type into. Prices render from the live data layer, dated, or the button reads “check price” and shows no number.

What we never publish

• A claim of testing, ownership or hands-on use of any product.
• An invented credential, award, certification or expert panel.
• A fabricated review, testimonial, star rating or review count.
• A price, rating or review count typed into a page by hand.
• Urgency or scarcity language. Nothing here is running out.
• A spec we cannot attribute to a published source.

Review and update cadence

• Prices: refreshed on an automated schedule. Anything older than 48 hours stops rendering as a number.
• Roundups: reviewed when a listed product is discontinued, when a manufacturer revises its published specification, or at least twice a year.
• Explainers and guides: reviewed when the underlying standard changes, and at least annually.
• Every page carries a visible published date and last updated date, and those dates feed the sitemap. They reflect real content changes, never the build timestamp.

Corrections

We would rather be corrected than be wrong. If a figure on this site does not match the manufacturer's published specification, or a standard is described inaccurately, tell us the page and the number at info@trailandtarp.com or through the contact page.

When we correct something material we change the page, update its last-updated date, and note the correction in the text. We do not quietly edit a claim out of existence. Typos and formatting fixes are made without a note.

Sourcing

Every product page links to the source of its specifications. Every explainer names the standard it is describing and links to the standards body. Where a figure comes from an independent measurement rather than the manufacturer — for example OutdoorGearLab's measured floor size for one tent — we say whose measurement it is, because the distinction matters.

Authorship

Everything on this site is written by Sawyer V., framed as an enthusiast rather than an expert, because that is what is true. No article here is attributed to a person who does not exist or to a team that does not exist.
