We have not tested this gear

No lab, no gear closet, no free samples. Here is exactly what we do instead, and what that method can and cannot tell you.

The plain statement

Trail & Tarp has not tested the gear it recommends. We do not own it, we have not slept in it, cooked on it or pitched it in a storm, and we have no test facility. Nobody here has.

Almost every competing page in this category leads with the opposite claim — “tested by”, “tested and reviewed”, “we buy everything we test”. We are not going to imitate that, because it would not be true, and because a claim like that is the easiest thing in the world for a reader or a competitor to check.

What we do instead

The obvious next question is why you should trust anything here. The answer is a method that is fully reproducible, which no amount of testing is: everything we assert, you can check.

  1. Published manufacturer specifications. Floor areas, center heights, packed weights, BTU output, capacities and runtimes are compiled from spec sheets and product manuals, and every product page on this site links to the source we read.
  2. The governing standard, named and explained. Where a number comes from a standardized test, we name the standard, describe the test and explain what it does and does not promise. Those are set out below.
  3. Arithmetic you can reproduce. Square feet per sleeper. Watt-hours per phone charge. Pack weight as a percentage of body weight. R-value against expected ground temperature. The conversions are shown so you can redo them with your own numbers.
  4. Live retail prices. Prices are never typed into a page. They render from a data layer that is refreshed on a schedule and stamped with a date, and if that data is more than 48 hours old the number disappears and the button reads “check price” instead. There is no such thing as a remembered price here.

This is the part we think is genuinely more useful than another publisher's field impression. Knowing that a “20 degree” bag from Kelty carries an ISO comfort rating of 31 F tells you more about how you will sleep than any amount of somebody else's subjective warmth.

How a pick gets chosen

In this order, and ties are broken by the item lower down the list:

  1. Does the published spec fit the job? Floor area per sleeper, R-value against season, BTU against group size. If it does not, nothing else matters.
  2. Is the number measured or asserted? An ISO-tested comfort rating beats a manufacturer's own figure, and we say which is which.
  3. Does the maker publish honestly? A company that publishes both an industry capacity and a “most comfortable” capacity is telling you something about how it talks to customers.
  4. Is it widely available? A recommendation you cannot buy is not a recommendation.
  5. Does it suit a beginner? Our reader is outfitting a household for the first time, not optimizing an ultralight kit.

Every pick states a drawback. That is a hard rule enforced by how this site is built — the field is required, so a pick without one cannot be published.

We do earn commission when you buy through our links, and that is set out in full at how this site is funded. Commission does not influence rankings, and where a cheaper retailer is better for the buyer we link the cheaper one.

The limits of this method, stated openly

A methodology page that claims no weaknesses is just another unsupported claim, so here are ours.

Where those limits bite on a specific page, we say so on that page rather than burying it here.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong, we want to know and we will fix it. Email through the contact page with the page and the number. When we correct something material, we update the page's modified date and note the change in the text rather than editing silently.
